Why Compelling Stories & Characters Matter

So, I've been doing a lot of writing around horror movies in articles for horror-movies.ca. I like to cover films that explore the unconventional characters that go through a lot of change in the duration of a 90-minute film.

In the indie film-making world, it is important to dedicate a good chunk of your time to make sure your characters and script are top-notch as people will still flock to see your indie film, even if it had a miniscule budget.

What I also enjoy about making horror films (on-top of writing them and writing articles about them) is that the creature is often times the star of the show. Not the A-list actor, not the top-notch director. -And often times it all depends (what makes or breaks the movie) on good writing...

Now, don't quote me yet because I haven't seen the movie, but I when I found the hidden gem Julia on YouTube (I have my ways - I'll tell you about it sometime) the first thought I had was "Now this story focuses on a compelling story arc!"

It is a Kill Bill-tale gone to the dark, vengeful side. That's where the similarities between these two films end, I believe. This is a horror-genre flick after-all, so the emphasis on the grotesque inner-working of a fractured mind are bound to come splashing onto the screen. This is where "Beatrix Kiddo" could have gone if she didn't have the discpline to temper her inner demons... And I'm interested to see where this is going...

And now I'll present to you all my finding on the movie Julia that I've collected so far and will most likely have updates on the film posted on horror-movies.ca.

julia-2014-posterHorror movies that portray a truly good main character gone bad throughout the story are few and far between, but always very memorable. As an audience, you are torn between conventional morals and inevitably rooting for the main character even after the change as you feel personally invested in what this person has gone through. Enter Julia, who looks to be everything the trailer promises the main character to be. Vengeful.

I actually have been working on a Top 10 article on the subject of good people turn bad in the duration of a movie as I think this is a fascinating category for horror movies in general. One second, the main character we're following is a straight arrow and the next, through a series of horrific events, they are the biggest bad-ass in the film. But don't take my word for it on whether or not that's where this movie is headed.

Julia is a story about one girl’s revenge, and perhaps wavering sanity, while trying to regain control of her life after a brutal trauma that happened to her. The movie is currently in post-production and, from the looks of the trailer, is definitely a title I will be looking to acquire. At least I hope as it has only premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and Market so far.

No word yet on whether it is set for a 2014 Halloween season release or if it will be pushed back to next year. Looks like another title to be released by Tombstone Distribution, a subsidiary of Archstone. It is labeled as a "A neon-noir revenge thriller" and directed by Matthew Brown who has done several shorts, but this is his first feature. Much love to all indie filmmakers!

Here’s the trailer and let us know what you think about this one on the horror-movies.ca site:
